Looking Glass Rock is a granite pluton that rises up off the valley floor, making it the crown jewel of southern Pisgah. Looking Glass is arguably one of the most iconic climbing areas in the region. With multi-pitch classics Like the “Nose” and “Sundial Crack” and many single-pitch options, it hosts a little something for everyone!
Table Rock is a meta-quartzite mountain on the east rim of Linville Gorge overlooking the entire region. On a clear day, you can see not only the gorge itself but also the Black Mountain Range, Grandfather Mountain, and Roan Mountain. Table Rock has the highest concentration of beginner-friendly multi-pitch routes located from its east face all the way to its north face.
The Amphitheater is also located in the stunning Linville Gorge further east down the rim. The Amphitheater hosts some of the best adventure climbing in the gorge. Iconic routes such as the “Mummy,” “Daddy,” and “Prow” all dwell in this iconic location. For those looking for a wilderness experience, it doesn’t get much better than this!
Shortoff Mountain is located on the far east end of Linville Gorge, closest to Lake James. Shortoff is arguably the best mix of adventure wilderness climbing and steep exposure. With Iconic routes like “Maginot Line” and “Dopey Duck,” you can’t beat the feeling of hearing the rushing river below and feeling the air beneath your feet.
Rumbling Bald (formerly known as Bald Mountain) in Hickory Nut Gorge area of Chimney Rock State Park was formed as we know it in the late 1800s by an extended earthquake resulting in an extensive boulder field and some of the best crack-climbing in North Carolina! Rumbling Bald is hands down the best winter climbing destination in Western North Carolina due to the thermal inversion that takes place there, and its lower elevation.
