Asheville Climbing Locations

Asheville is the hub for Western North Carolina’s climbing community. Its proximity to our various climbing destinations, wonderful restaurants, and breweries make it a great place to hang out, eat food, drink beer, gear up, and launch for the day’s climbing objective!

Let’s start with some of the best climbing spots within an hour’s drive of Asheville:

Rumbling Bald: Asheville’s home crag, Rumbling Bald, is located in Hickory Nut Gorge and is part of Chimney Rock State Park. Depending on where you are located or staying in Asheville, Rumbling Bald is about 30-45 minute drive. Rumbling Bald offers single and multi-pitch climbs from a range of difficulty suited for everyone. Note that Rumbling Bald is also the area’s best winter climbing location!

Raven Rock: Located about 45 minutes from Asheville in Upper Hickory Nut Gorge near Gerton. Raven hosts several challenging rock climbs suited for the advanced climber! Spring, Fall, and early summer are the best seasons to climb here.

Eagle Rock: Also located in the Hickory Nut Gorge area, about a 45-minute drive from Asheville, Eagle is on the mountain, located directly behind the north side of Rumbling Bald (unfortunately, there is no permitted climbing on the north side). Eagle Rock hosts a number of climbs in a range of difficulties suited for everyone.

Rocky Fork State Park: While not in North Carolina, Rocky Fork is about a 45-minute drive from Asheville. Rocky Fork is a beautiful Tennessee state park right over the mountain into eastern TN that hosts a number of climbs in a range of difficulty.

Looking Glass Rock: The premier granite destination in Western North Carolina and the Asheville area! Located about 1 hour from Asheville, Looking Glass hosts an adventure for everyone. From beginner to advanced multi-pitch climbs or single-pitch climbs and then some! Even some of the best Big Wall test pieces in the South for those who dare!
